Access to fresh food is the main obstacle to long-term space exploration
and human colonization: limiting the possibilities and impacting the
astronaut’s mental and physiological health. It limits how far away from
Earth we can travel and how long we can stay in space since there is a
limit to how much food we can stock or initially carry to space. If we
are to travel to Mars or the Moon, we need food production systems that
are bio-regenerative, and that can locally feed the communities with
quality nutrition.

Lifeboat Strategy

Our human future could be very good or very bad. We might settle the
reachable universe, we might live forever, or we might go extinct. What
we do right now might make the difference.
Benjamin Franklin started as a printer’s apprentice, worked on his
brother’s newspaper, and later developed his own printing business. He
helped his apprentices start their own printing businesses and retained
partial ownership. Eventually he had enough money to quit printing and
start electrical experiments. His discovery that electricity flowed on a
conductor between positive and negative poles was presented by a
Franklin associate at the Royal (Scientific) Society in England. It was
the key to our modern use of electricity. Thomas Kuhn wrote a book about
scientific revolutions that featured scientists like Copernicus and
Einstein—and also Franklin. Because Franklin was known in Europe, some
of the American colonies asked him to represent their interests in
England. Franklin did this for fifteen years, but finally became
discouraged, so he returned to America, advocated independence, and was
on the committee that wrote the Declaration of Independence, which
started the American Revolution.
The new nation sent Franklin to France, a traditional enemy of England,
to see if they would help. The US State Department lists Franklin as the
first US Ambassador. He charmed the French, but they were not
enthusiastic about helping because they thought his side would lose. They changed their minds when Franklin was able to announce that the
Colonial Army had won the Battle of Saratoga, and they began to send
military aid. The colonists won the Battle of Yorktown, the final battle
of the war, with help from French soldiers and a French fleet.
Later Franklin was a member of the US Constitutional Convention, which
produced a Constitution that contained a great deal of enlightenment
thinking, a Constitution that worked. We at Lifeboat hope to navigate
extreme circumstances that can go to something like infinity in positive
or negative directions, i.e. existential risk/opportunity singularities.
This may require arrangements that work on a global or greater level,
arrangements that reflect the best thinking that we can put together. Heroes of history like Benjamin Franklin are an existence proof that our
dreams can become the new reality.
