Lifeboat Strategy

Our human future could be very good or very bad. We might settle the
reachable universe, we might live forever, or we might go extinct. What
we do right now might make the difference.
Survivors in a real lifeboat face choices that are personally
existential. How can they summon help? How do they get food? Which way
should they row? The right choices are often uncertain. However, a
choice must be made, because time flows on, and they are constrained to
do something, because even doing nothing counts as something they might
do. Unless the risk is too high, it is usually better to try something
that has a good chance of working.
If there is more than one person in the lifeboat, the choice of what to
do becomes a joint decision. That makes decision making more complex,
but it can also make it more likely to work, and more likely to work for
everyone.
Military generals have an advantage over us when planning strategy
because they are formally in charge, and don’t have to advocate to
enable implementation. However, we have a different advantage over them.
We are trying to save the world, figuratively. It is hard to implement
most save-the-world projects without substantial resources, and it
requires substantial cooperation to assemble those resources. In most
cases, we must convince many others. It is appropriate that others
participate in a decision that will affect their lives. Their
participation in the decision is usually a plus because it is harder to
convince others of bad ideas. The process of convincing others gives our
ideas multiple reviews, and joint decisions are usually better than the
decisions of a single individual.
It is hard to convince many others, but heroes of history have done so,
and it is worth trying because there is much good to be done. There are
billions of current and future people who will benefit if we get it
right.
