Lifeboat Strategy
By James Blodgett
Our human future could be very good or very bad. We might settle the
reachable universe, we might live forever, or we might go extinct. What we do right now might make the difference.
Strategy is simply what one decides to do. Strategy is not a big deal
when deciding what to do about minor issues. However, strategy is a
big deal when deciding what to do about major issues. That is when it
is important to think hard and consult relevant people. Who should
help make decisions depends on chains of command and democratic
arrangements and competence and time available. If you are not the
decision maker, it is sometimes helpful to suggest an idea to that
person or persons.
When I see things going wrong for some organization of which I am not
a part, I sometimes send a nice letter that starts as follows: “The
quality control people say ‘a defect is a treasure.’ An identified
defect is a treasure because it gives you a chance to improve your
system.” Then I explain the problem. Often the problem gets fixed. I
can’t claim credit for all fixes because sometimes their fix was in
the works before I wrote my letter. I sometimes see definitive proof
of a fix having been in the works because that fix is applied before I
get around to writing my letter.
On the other hand, sometimes I learn that my letter was effective
because I receive a letter from them thanking me for my suggestion and
saying that it is being applied. Strategy can be a really big deal when
applied on the Lifeboat level. Because it is a big deal, it is important
to get it as right as reasonably possible.
