It is important to realize that without full terraforming, with at least
a half-atmosphere or more of pressure, the fanciful images of
skyscrapers and shimmering domed cities on the surface of Mars are not
realistic. Once there are enough humans living under Mars surface, the
public pressure for terraforming will build and action will be taken. Eventually creating a living world on the surface of Mars — to act as a
backup for Earth’s biome, not as a replacement for it — is a great
dream, and a valid one.
Lifeboat Strategy: Our Human Future

Our human future could be very good or very bad. We might settle the
reachable universe, we might live forever, or we might go extinct. What
we do now might make the difference.
I am a writer. I am writing this now. I have also published elsewhere,
and I am editor of Existential Risk/Opportunity Singularity Management,
available at http://www.global-risk-sig.org/pub.htm. If you grok that
deliberately difficult title, it is very Lifeboat.
At times writing is difficult, but writers have a maxim: “Writers
write”. It is an inspirational maxim: If I want to be a writer, I had
better sit down at my computer and write something. I say this as an
inspiration to readers who want to be Lifeboat heroes. If you want to
save the world, then do it. (Be careful to get it right.) One way is
intellectual. Many people don’t care about futures. Help them care.
Figure out a rational that will make a good future something that
people want to make happen. If you can’t think of a valid project,
another way to help is by contributing to a group project, or starting
a new one, or even carrying water for one person who is doing good
things. Another way to help is by donating money.
