Dr. Vahe Poghosyan

Vahe Poghosyan, Ph.D. is Head of the MEG Laboratory and Consultant of Neuronavigation at King Fahad Medical City in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He has a high-level expertise in MEG (clinical and research), cognitive neuroscience, neuroimaging, and biomedical engineering, applied mathematics, and computer science.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is the most novel, completely non-invasive functional neuroimaging technique capable of generating activation maps for the entire brain in real-time.

Vahe has close to 20 years of experience in MEG, EEG, and cognitive neuroscience as well as in the development and software implementation of mathematical and computational methods in the field of data analysis. Currently, he is Head of the MEG Unit at KFMC (the largest and most advanced medical complex in Saudi Arabia), where he routinely uses MEG in the pre-surgical evaluation of patients with epilepsy, vascular malformations, and tumors.

He uses state-of-the-art tools and cutting-edge research methods, in addition to standard procedures, to localize the generators of epileptic discharges and map the eloquent cortex, including sensory, motor, memory (verbal and visual), and language (expressive and receptive) systems of the brain. Furthermore, he conducts innovative research on neural biomarkers for various psychiatric disorders and understanding their underlying neural mechanisms. He also studies the neural correlates of common neuropsychological tests.

Vahe earned his MSc in Mathematics (1997) from Yerevan State University and Ph.D. in Neurophysiology (2000) from the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia. He held the positions of Research Scientist in RIKEN Brain Science Institute in Japan, Senior Scientist, and Director of Research Training Program at AAI Scientific Cultural Services Ltd. in Cyprus.

Vahe has a demonstrated record of research accomplishments with over 30 peer-reviewed research articles and numerous papers in conference proceedings, and presentations.

These include Epileptic MEG Spikes Detection Using Amplitude Thresholding and Dynamic Time Warping, Using MEG to Understand the Progression of Light Sleep and the Emergence and Functional Roles of Spindles and K-Complexes, The initial motivation, history and recent results for using MEG to Understand Sleep and its implication in specific health conditions, MEG and EEG polysomnography studies explore the role of K-Complexes and related EEG rhythms in maintaining a sound and safe sleep, Neuromodulation of Epilepsy Network, and Applied and integrated science of Epilepsy.
